Home International Regatta 2008
Cardiff Bay
Home Nations Rowing Championship returns to Cardiff Bay
This Saturday Cardiff Harbour Authority is proud to host the cream of
international rowing at the Home International Regatta.
The adrenalin fuelled races commence at 11am from the starting line at the
Barrage, racing down the course to the Inner Harbour. Spectators can cheer at
the finishing line at Roald Dahl Plass or enjoy the competitions along the
waterfront with pedestrian access round to the Barrage on the recently opened
Cardiff Bay Barrage Coastal Path.
The Home International Regatta is an important event for rising stars.
Olympic rower Steve Redgrave started his career at the event before joining the
Great Britain crew. A prize-giving ceremony after each race will see competitors
receiving medals for individual races, with a team prize to the nation achieving
the highest points at the end of the day based upon all results.
With free access to this exhilarating event, you will be treated to a
multitude of races over the 1500 metre course, which will cater for seniors,
juniors and for the first time the event will include two races for adaptive
rowers across a 500 metre course.
Events such as these demonstrates the commitment in Wales to promote rowing,
fitness and exercise, and is an exciting day for competitors and spectators
alike . Cardiff Bay is already home to world class events including European and
World powerboat and sailing championships, national events and competitive
Harbour regattas.
Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sports, Leisure and Culture said: “This
annual event rotates between the England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and we
are delighted to welcome it back to Cardiff after the successful championships
in 2000, in association with the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association, WARA. The
Home Nations races are an opportunity for existing and prospective future
Internationals to test their ability on an excellent course against the
beautiful backdrop of Cardiff Bay.”
This event is run in conjunction with Adventure Cardiff, based at the Cardiff
Bay Water Activity Centre which was established in 2005. Since then, it has
become the facility of choice for the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association's
National Training Squad, thus enhancing Cardiff Bay’s reputation as a first
class venue for both national and international water activity. If you are
